Children and Families
Children and young people are welcome in our churches!
We believe children are a vital part of the life of the church, and are the church of today as well as the church of tomorrow. We include and involve children as much as possible and employ a paid Children and Youth Worker. We long for every child to discover for themselves that they are loved and accepted by God who is father to us all and that Jesus - who shared our humanity - can help them in their daily lives.
If you are considering baptising your child we would love to talk to you. See the page on Baptisms for further information.
For three Sundays a month there are children’s activities during the main Sunday morning services (9.30am at St Michael’s and 11.00am at St Mark’s) though of course children are welcome to stay in the services too. At St Michael’s we have a carpeted area at the front (with easy escape access to crèche and toilet) and toys specially set aside for children and parents.
St Michael’s 9.30am service offers:
- Tots’ church - for pre-school ages (for babies under one we ask that a parent or guardian is ready to stay with the child)
- Infant Sunday Club: Live Wires - from Reception to year 2
- Junior Sunday Club: Big Kidz - from Year 3 upwards
- Teen Service: 11-18 every Sunday in term time.
St Mark’s 11.00 service offers:
A Sunday club for all ages.
Monthly Age Worship Services
On the first Sunday of every month at both churches we hold an informal family-friendly service where the children stay in church for the whole service. This gives the whole church family the opportunity to worship together. See the online diary for further details.
A group for Year 9+ teenagers meets on Sunday night to enable young people to discover the relevance of the Christian faith for their lives today.
We run Messy Church sessions approximately once a term at St Mark’s. This is a national movement for families that is about fun, creativity, hospitality and celebration. There are lots of craft activities around a theme (which work best for children from approximately 3 to 11), followed by some songs, a short Bible Story and finally we share a meal.
During the Week
St Michael’s Tots
This is a thriving toddler group for children aged 0-4 and their carers which takes place in the parish centre and St Michael’s church on Thursdays from 10.00am to 11.30noon. Activities include play, storytime and crafts and there are refreshments for adults and children. New parents, carers and tots are always welcome!
Friday drop-in after school in Parish centre for Years 7-10. We have positive links with local schools and are involved with a school lunch club and a school Christian Union.
We abide by all Church of England policies in the area of child protection. All those who work with children at both churches have been DBS-checked and have undergone child protection training.
For further details of all our activities please contact Ben Mattinson on 07846 393 968 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Midweek Children’s Group Activities
There are a number of thriving groups and organisations running activities during the week, all of which have good links with the parish.
All these activities take place in the Parish Centre, next to St Michael’s church, unless otherwise stated. Times and days may change. Check the online diary for more information.
For more information and contact details for those organising these groups contact the church office (please link to contact page for office opening hours) on 01228 511430 or by visiting the websites for these organisations, or checking out the local group on facebook.
