Children and Families
Children and young people are welcome in our churches!
We believe children are a vital part of the life of the church, and are the church of today as well as the church of tomorrow. We include and involve children as much as possible and employ a paid Children and Youth Worker. We long for every child to discover for themselves that they are loved and accepted by God who is father to us all and that Jesus - who shared our humanity - can help them in their daily lives.
If you are considering baptising your child we would love to talk to you. See the page on Baptisms for further information.
For three Sundays a month there are children’s activities during the main Sunday morning services (9.30am at St Michael’s and 11.00am at St Mark’s) though of course children are welcome to stay in the services too.
St Michael’s 9.30am service offers:
- Sunday Club: from Reception up to year 6
- Teens: for years 7 and above
These groups meet every Sunday during term-time, apart from the first Sunday of the month (see below). All children are welcome to join the groups. We meet altogether in church to start with, then move over to the Parish Centre after 10 minutes or so for our groups.
St Mark’s 11.00 service offers:
A Sunday club for all ages.
Monthly Age Worship Services
On the first Sunday of every month at both churches we hold an informal family-friendly service where the children and young people stay in church for the whole service. This gives the whole church family the opportunity to worship together. See the online diary for further details.
Messy Church takes place approximately once a term, at 3.00pm on Sunday afternoon at St Mark’s. This is a national movement for families that is about fun, creativity, hospitality and celebration. There are lots of craft activities around a theme (which work best for children from approximately 3 to 11), followed by some songs, a short Bible Story and finally we share a meal.
During the Week
St Michael’s Tots
This is a thriving toddler group for children aged 0-4 and their carers which takes place in the parish centre and St Michael’s church on Thursdays from 10.00am to 11.30am. Activities include play, story-time and crafts and there are refreshments for adults and children. New parents, carers and tots are always welcome!
Friday drop-in after school in the Parish Centre for school years 7-10. We have positive links with local schools and are involved with a school lunch club and a school Christian Union.
We abide by all Church of England policies in the area of child protection. All those who work with children at both churches have been DBS-checked and have undergone child protection training.
