Nigel has been the vicar since 2013. He is a Yorkshireman, and was formerly a Vicar in a team of churches in Leeds. He has been involved with the New Wine network for many years. He is married to Janet and they have 2 grown up daughters. In his spare time he enjoys walking up big hills, playing golf and is a supporter of Leeds Rhinos Rugby League club and follows his hometown football club Huddersfield Town.

Originally licensed as a Reader in the Chester Diocese, Amanda joined the Stanwix team in 2015 having retired from a long nursing career specialising in the care of premature and sick babies in both West Cumbria and Manchester. She has since trained for ordination and was ordained Deacon in Carlisle Diocese in July 2021. She is now delighted to serve as a Non-Stipendiary Minister on the Stanwix staff team. Amanda’s desire is to see God’s Kingdom here on earth grow and for people to know just how much God loves them.

Originally from Cheshire, Sarah came to Carlisle in 2016 to study at the University of Cumbria. She has always had a heart for working with children but also enjoys walking, beach trips and exploring new places in her van.


John Libby

Geordie born and bred, John has been National Director of the Langham Partnership, an international Christian discipleship and training organisation, since 2016. Previously he was vicar of St James Church, Carlisle, for many years, and prior to that spent 20 years in international banking. He now serves as a Non-Stipendiary Minister on the Stanwix staff team. He enjoys facilitating the church 'Bible-in-a-Year' initiative, is an active Homegroup member, and is on the Board of Restore (Diocesan charity shop network).

Janet is a semi-retired Special Needs Teacher. She enjoys reading and loves spending time by the sea. She is married to Nigel (our Vicar) and they have 2 grown-up daughters.

Now retired, Rob has worked in a variety of jobs including banking and finance, church administration, publishing and bookselling. He is married to Liz and they have three grown up daughters and four grandchildren. He would like to see the church continue to grow both numerically and in understanding and application of the Christian faith. He enjoys music, books, cooking, walking.

Robert is passionate for people to discover the real person God created them to be. Originally from the south of England, he has lived and worshipped in the parish for over a third of his life. His background includes graphic design, marketing and teaching. He has a playful enjoyment of words and loves beauty, whether experienced through the green-ness of the Eden valley, visiting art galleries, or the music of J.S. Bach. Housemates include several pet rats.

Kathy lost her faith as a student, but God called her back in 2007. She used to be a Geography teacher and more recently worked as a flying instructor.  She enjoys running (she has run for England), fellwalking, travelling at home and overseas, and cooking. She spent a year as an exchange teacher in Wellington, New Zealand, and is the Area Coordinator for Street Pastors in Carlisle. She would like to see the Spirit stir up his gifts in God's people to take the good news of Jesus into the community and beyond.

Liz was licensed as a reader in 2021.  She is married to Kevin, who is often seen playing the piano, and they have two grown up children. She previously worked in Kenya for twelve years as a mission doctor at Presbyterian Church of East Africa hospitals where she was employed by the Church of Scotland. She met Kevin in Kenya and both their children were born there. She now works as a part-time GP. She continues to feel strongly about bringing God's justice and peace to the most vulnerable in the world.

David became a Christian fourteen years ago after God led him via CUFC and the Woodland Gospels to St Michael’s for a 'Victorian weekend'. Later after several visits to New Wine, ALPHA  and a Called to Serve course he felt that God was calling him to serve in his local church. His interests are broad – mountaineering, long walks, foreign travel, Street Pastors, music both classical and jazz and railways.

Born and bred in Carlisle, John came to faith after attending a Saints Alive course run by a previous vicar of St Michael's, and has been a committed member of this church for over 30 yrs. John and his wife Sue have 4 grown-up children and 10 grandchildren who they love to see as often as possible. John still works running the newsagents and post office in St Ann's and Belah and has a passion for serving the Lord in this community and beyond! In his spare time he likes playing golf and supporting Newcastle United.

Janet moved to Carlisle in 2012 to be near her husband's family, and has been a member of St Michael's ever since. She has really appreciated the support and friendship over the years, in the house groups, especially since her husband's death.

Ann worked in Insurance and Accountancy all her working life until her retirement a few years ago. She is married to John - they have two children and six grandchildren. She believes in the power of prayer, trusts that seeds sown will eventually begin to grow, and that Faith and Trust go hand in hand.

Ruth and her husband Martin came to live in Carlisle in 2016, when Martin retired from working with the OM Ships Ministry. They previously lived in Germany at the Ships' Headquarters, which is where their 3 children were born. Those children are now all married; two are still in Germany, the third lives in Thailand and works with OMF (a different Mission organisation - see Mission Partners page). Ruth is passionate about world mission and seeing God's message of hope and salvation get out to the unreached.
